In today's IHT, an article by David Stafford about the sacrifices made on June 6th and the following days by ordinary soldiers who were killed only minutes or hours after they had set foot on European soil for the first time in their young lives. The author also writes about the importance of D-Day both as a historical event and as a turning point in the lives of so many Europeans. He stresses, as did general Eisenhower, that the operation was a true Allied enterprise, not simply an American one.
