Except for those who still believe that settling and guarding every inch of Land beyond the Green Line is vital for Israel's security, many if not most people in Israel have come to realize that the occupation not only costs us economically and politically, it also weakens us militarily. As Yehi'am Weitz of Haifa University argues, for many soldiers the main thing that they have been trained for and ordered to do is manning roadblocks and checkpoints. Waging a real war is something totally different, and it is very difficult if not impossible to train soldiers to do both tasks properly, which partly explains the failures of the last war. According to professor Weitz, we have to choose what we want, "a defense force or a roadblock force".
