Dagen van de waarheid

Toen ik gistermorgen mijn ronde deed langs websites met Israëlisch, Nederlands en ander nieuws wachtten me twee verrassingen. Allereerst las ik dat Frankrijk tegen Brazilië zal spelen om een plaats in de halve finales. Wat me nog meer verbaasde was de Israëlische invasie van de Gaza-strook. Natuurlijk had ook ik op de televisie de massieve samentrekking van materieel en manschappen rond de grens met Gaza gezien, maar ik hoopte net als veel anderen tegen beter weten in nog op een relatief goede afloop van een verhaal dat afgelopen zondagmorgen begon met een aanval door Palestijnse terroristen op een legerpost in Israël. Daarbij werden twee Israëlische soldaten gedood. Een 19-jarige korporaal, Gilad Shalit, raakte waarschijnlijk gewond en werd door de terroristen ontvoerd. Een diplomatieke race tegen de klok begon. Vanaf het begin benadrukten premier Olmert, minister van defensie Peretz en andere woordvoerders van de regering en van het leger dat ze premier Haniyeh en andere Hamas-prominenten persoonlijk voor de behouden terugkeer van de soldaat verantwoordelijk houden. De ontvoerders, die direct of indirect verbonden zijn aan de gewapende tak van Hamas, eisen de vrijlating van Palestijnse gevangenen in Israël. De Israëlische invasie gistermorgen bevestigde helaas dat de Israëlische regering en legerleiding niet veel hoop meer hebben dat Gilad Shalit nog te redden is. We denken hier allemaal aan Nahshon Wachsman, de soldaat die in oktober 1994 na zijn ontvoering vermoord werd door Hamas terroristen tijdens een mislukte bevrijdingsoperatie, waarbij ook kapitein Nir Poraz werd gedood. Net als twaalf jaar geleden leeft heel Israël mee met de ouders en verdere familie van de ontvoerde soldaat. Net als nu werd toen door de Hamas de vrijlating van Palestijnse gevangenen ( tweehonderd terroristen, waaronder de grondlegger van de organisatie, Ahmed Yassin ) geëist in ruil voor het leven van de ontvoerde soldaat. Iedere vader en moeder in Israël heeft zichzelf de laatste dagen meer dan eens in gedachten in de schoenen van Noam en Aviva Shalit geplaatst, en ik weet zeker dat zelfs zij die niet of nauwelijks religieus zijn meerdere keren per dag voor Gilad's veilige thuiskomst bidden. De ontvoeringen – ook Eliyahu Asheri, een tiener uit de nederzetting Itamar op de Westoever, werd ontvoerd, zijn lichaam is vannacht in Ramallah gevonden – zijn net als de aanhoudende raketaanvallen vanuit Gaza op Israël een gevolg van de machtsstrijd binnen de Palestijnse Authoriteit en binnen Hamas. De 'miliaire' afdeling van de organisatie propageert, samen met de Syrische tak van de organisatie, een veel aggressievere en minder pragmatische lijn dan het meer politieke leiderschap dat zich in Gaza, de Westoever en Israëlische gevangenissen bevindt. Een voorbeeld van de houding van het meer pragmatische deel van Hamas is het akkoord dat net deze week werd bereikt tussen de organisatie en haar grote concurrent, President Abbas' Fatah, over 'het gevangenen document'. Dit is een door vertegenwoordigers, in Israëlische gevangenissen, van bijna alle Palestijnse facties opgesteld stuk, waarin wordt gesproken over "een onafhankelijke staat met Jeruzalem als zijn hoofdstad in alle in 1967 bezette gebieden". Sommige commentatoren zien daarin een impliciete erkenning van de joodse staat, niets wereldschokkends maar wel een mogelijke basis voor Palestijns-Israëlische onderhandelingen. Een jaar geleden ging de toenmalige Israëlische regering – waarvan veel sleutelfiguren ook nu in het kabinet zitten – de confrontatie aan met het meest compromisloze deel van de Israëlische bevolking. Sharon, Olmert en andere rechts-nationalistische politieke leiders hadden eindelijk ingezien dat de bezetting schadelijk is voor Israël en de Groot-Israël droom een niet te verwezenlijken ideaal is. Israël heeft zich volledig teruggetrokken uit de Gaza-strook. Niemand hier had Palestijnse dankbetuigingen verwacht, of een plotselinge uitbraak van pais en vree. De meeste Israëliërs zijn zich bewust van de moeilijke omstandigheden waarin de Palestijnen leven en van Israël's mede-verantwoordelijkheid daarvoor. Maar de dagelijkse beschietingen vanuit Gaza en nu de aanval op en de ontvoering vanuit een basis in Israël zelf zijn geen zaken die zelfs de meest vredelievende regering over zijn kant zou kunnen laten gaan. Meer dan ooit tevoren sinds januari is het uur der waarheid voor de Hamas regering aangebroken. Zij zal de confrontatie met de meest extreme Palestijnse tegenstanders van wat voor normalisatie dan ook moeten aangaan, binnen Hamas en daarbuiten. Uitspraken van Israëlische politieke gieren als Binyamin Nethanyahu of Avigdor Lieberman ( "Israël moet het huis van Haniyeh in een parkeerplaats veranderen" ) hebben weinig praktische waarde maar geven wel aan dat niet alleen de regering Haniyeh onder grote binnenlandse druk staat. Shimon Peres zei dat de Palestijnse leiders een Hamas-extremist als Khaled Mashal vanuit Damascus het lot van het Palestijnse volk laten bepalen. Als Ismail Haniyeh dat lot weer in eigen hand kan nemen en deze nachtmerrie alsnog tot een min of meer goed einde weet te brengen door Gilad Shalit levend aan Israël over te dragen kan deze affaire voor een positieve doorbraak zorgen. Lukt dat niet, dan is het einde van de ellende voor Palestijnen en Israëliërs nog lang niet in zicht.

Here is the English version of an article that appeared in the Dutch daily Trouw one week ago. Developments this week changed the picture in more than one way ( today an article appears in the Dutch daily Friesch Dagblad about the abduction of Gilad Shalit, the murder - or, as the AP likes to call is, execution - of Eliyahu Asheri, Israel's response to that and - most of all - the different roles played by Hamas ) but, at the same time, plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

The first victims of war

'Truth is the first victim of war' is a cliché, which does not mean that it is a lie. On June 9th an explosion rocked a Gaza beach and killed seven members of one Palestinian family. In the weeks that have passed since then the Hamas government used this incident in its power struggle with President Abbas and his Fatah movement, and in its efforts to score macabre 'goodwill points' with the international community. Israel murders children while Hamas restrains itself. They do not mention that the Qassam rockets which for years have been fired almost daily in the direction of Israel – with the active and passive support of Hamas – also claim victims ( among them 3-year-old Afik Zahavi ) and have made life hell for thousands of children in cities like Sderot. The Israeli army, on the other hand, tried hard to prove that it was not an Israeli shell that killed these seven Palestinian civilians. In newspapers, on websites and on television evidence and arguments are presented that either exonerate Israel and prove that the explosion was staged or caused by Hamas itself, or show that Israel is the one to blame. Of course I, like anybody else, tend to prefer believing one version of the truth rather than another. Still, in the end it does not really matter who is responsible. As Yael, an idealistic new immigrant from the US, wrote on her weblog: go and ask Huda Ghalia, the little girl who in one bang lost her parents and three siblings, whether she really cares who did it. That in different media this little girl is seven, ten, eleven or twelve years old only makes things even more confusing and unreal. Each of us creates and believes his own truth, and yet the only truth that matters is that Palestinian and Israeli children are the first and most important victims of 'the' conflict, more so than any truth. Children on both sides of the border between Israel and Gaza live in constant fear. The Israeli government is pressed and eager not to leave the continuing Qassam attacks unanswered, which could be one of the reasons why the Israeli army appears to be less cautious than usual when it operates in heavily populated areas. This results in even more children being killed, which is a welcome excuse for Hamas and other Palestinian terror organizations to swear revenge and fire even more rockets. And so on and so forth: unfortunately in the Middle East logic and the circle of life often are a bit twisted and bitter. The Palestinians and Israel seem unable or unwilling to solve the conflict themselves. President Abbas is quite weak and has to make sure not to be seen as too compliant towards Israel. Obviously Ehud Olmert's government does not have the murder of Palestinian children as its objective, but it also cannot let Sderot become a ghost town. In the five months since its election the Hamas government never really proved that it is prepared to become a sincere negotiation partner. The organization still has not recognized unambiguously Israel's right to exist. At best it insinuates halfheartedly that a long-term truce can be negotiated, while at the same time – with the knowledge and cooperation of Hamas – enormous quantities of arms are smuggled into the Gaza Strip, Qassam rockets keep falling in Israel ( and in Gaza itself ), and suicide attacks inside Israel continue as well. Clearly the Bush administration, Russia and the UN have more important issues on their mind. It is time, therefore, for the European Union to take the lead and break the deadlock. This should be done in a positive manner. By now we all know that the Union does not want to deal with the Hamas government, nor will it recognize any borders that are unilaterally determined by Israel. Now the EU has to state unequivocally what it does want exactly, and how it views the future for both Palestinians and Israelis. After that it will have to follow the example of Vito Corleone and make both the Israeli and Palestinian government a comprehensive offer that neither can refuse, at least not without losing their credibility in the eyes of the international community and of their own peoples. A balanced, determined and clear-cut European proposal, with political and economical carrots and sticks, I cannot think of any other mircale drug that could bring us deliverance here. What I do know, though, is that as long as the children of Gaza and Sderot are at the mercy of our non-leaders their lives will not become much more livable.

A few days ago, when poor Gilad Shalit was just an anonymous soldier in the IDF, I put this posting by Lila of Letters from Rungholt among my favorites so that I could refer to it later. It is a very good commentary on the statements that Roger Waters made during his visit to and performance in Israel, and on the whole issue of the security fence and on security fences in general ( Africa-Spain, US-Mexico, Ukraine-Czech Republic ). I apologize for the fact that the article is in German, well not for that fact in itself ( German can be such a beautiful language ) but because some ( most? ) of you probably do not understand it. That is a shame. Lila often has very interesting things to say, and as an Israeli mother and insider who knows what Israel looks like on the outside she provides her readers with a very personal, very Israeli view on all that is going on here. If you do understand German you should follow her coverage of the developments surrounding Gilad Shalit, Eliyahu Asheri and Israel's ongoing operation in the Gaza Strip.

I believe that very few Israelis did not think at least once this week about Nahshon Wachsman z"l, and about how we empathized with his parents and siblings during those terrible days in October 1994. This morning, while writing an article for a Dutch newspaper, I found this beautiful and moving In Memoriam that Esther Wachsman wrote for her son. Let's hope and pray that this time the ending will be not as painful and sad as it was twelve years ago, and that any time soon we will see Gilad Shalit and Eliyahu Asheri hug their parents and siblings again. I was very moved when I read this morning that the Shalit family made it known that they hope "that no soldiers will be injured in the operation launched in Gaza to free their son".

Until now all the rumors and claims regarding the missing teenager from Itamar turned out to be true, so this is bad news:

As if the IDF and the security forces did not have enough problems to deal with. For weeks if not months there have been warnings about terrorists planning to kidnap soldiers and settlers. The army has warned the settlers time and again not to travel by hitching a lift and its warnings have been ignored constantly, as we could see two weeks ago, when two young women were almost kidnapped. Today a nightmare scenario seems to have become reality. Apparently a teenage boy from Itamar ( who according to his father "has the habit of leaving for trips with friends without informing his parents" ) was kidnapped and is held by Palestinian terrorists. Israel, of course, should do everything it can to free this boy, even if that includes endangering our soldiers. But it is about time that the settlers themselves start to realize that they have a responsibility not only for their own security but also for that of those who are there to protect them. Also, it would be a proof of their intelligence and their sense of responsibility if the settlers started to show signs of understanding that they do not live in the most peaceful and safe neighborhood in the world, and that - whether they like it or not - different safety rules apply within and beyond the Green Line. As a friend of mine pointed out, public transport in the Westbank is very infrequent and can be unreliable, but I am sorry, that does not justify constant reckless behavior that endangers yourself, your children and those who have to endanger themselves not only to protect you - that is their duty as long as the government has not decided to get us out of at least most of the territories - but also to prevent you from getting into unnecessary trouble and - after you got yourself into that trouble - to save you. Let's hope and pray that Eliyahu Ashri and Gil'ad Shalit will return home soon, safe and in good health.

Another detail that could be helpful in securing the release of Corporal Shalit is the fact that he holds both Israeli and French citizenship. In our solidarity with the Shalit family we should not forget that in the same attack that ended with the kidnapping of their son two other families lost their sons. First Lieutenant Hanan Barak, 21, from Arad, and Staff Sergeant Pavel Slutzker, 20, of Dimona, were killed yesterday. May their memory be blessed.

We always feel a bit uncomfortable when we see or hear parents or other family members plea to those who kidnapped their father, mother, son, daughter etc. The automatic response is that one should not negotiate with and humiliate oneself in front of the terrorists, but we all know that if it was our son, daughter etc. who was held captive we would not hesitate and do whatever we think that the terrorists want us to do only so that our loved one(s) will come home safe and in good health. Meanwhile, as so often, some pathetic politicians already know exactly what should be done, who should be fired ( "MK Lieberman: PM Olmert should fire Defense Minister Peretz " ) and whom should be fired at ( "MK Lieberman: We should turn Haniyeh's house into a parking lot" ). They - and others - share their been-there-done-that wonderplans ( "MK Steinitz: Set out for Defense Shield 2 in Gaza" ) with us only to score a few lousy points in this or that poll. Bibi shows his legendary leadership skills by trying to lead the bunch, and Avigdor Lieberman seems to know something that most experts are definitely not sure about ( "PM Haniyeh knew of the attack and gave his authorization" ). Maybe we should be glad that Hamas is governing Gaza these days. O.k., the organization is behind much of the violence that is pouring out of Gaza, and the power struggles within Palestinian society are probably what led to the anarchy that reigns in Gaza and to the attack yesterday, but on the other hand, the only thing that somehow might serve as a life insurance for poor Gil'ad Shalit is the political arm of Hamas knowing that it is responsible for his well-being, that it has a lot to lose ( and a lot to win by bringing this affair to a good end ), and that its leaders ( and the Palestinian people ) will pay dearly if something happens to this soldier. Let's hope ( and pray, for those of us who believe ) that common sense and all sides' interests will determine the outcome of this story, so that Gil'ad will very soon be reunited with his parents and siblings.

On the Face's Lisa brings us an interesting article by Meir Shalev - which she translated herself - about the difference between a state and a homeland. Shalev explains how turning holy places into fortified and hardly accessible binkers takes away much of their holiness and spiritual power.

"...after a 40-year struggle of belligerence and stupidity, Israel has finally understood that it must return the territories it conquered in the Six Day War. We are giving up part of our homeland in order to have a better and more normal state." Amen, Ken Yihyeh Ratson.

Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who thought he would finish his nr. 113 international match for the Netherlands ( a record ) differently. ( Picture found on Verbaljam ) As much as I pretended not to care about the soccer worldcup, of course every time that Holland played I followed the score online and wanted the Dutch team to win. Yesterday I did not follow the game until the beginning of the first half, because I was working and at the same time following the developments in and around Gaza. Since Holland was beaten 1-0 by Portugal yesterday evening ( with 16 yellow cards, resulting in four red cards ) I can really be indifferent again and stop caring at all for the next two weeks. For those of you who are looking for an alternative team to cheer on, Anglosaxy gives one good reason why England deserves your support.

I apologize to those readers who do not understand Dutch, do not think that I am neglecting you. I did not have much time to blog, nor did I have much to blog about in English. I am following the reports on the attack against the army post near Kerem Shalom ( the website of Dutch television NOS told us until a few hours ago that the IDF had invaded the Gaza Strip; not only was that not true ( yet ), but they forgot to mention the Palestinian attack ) closely, but I cannot think of anything insightful that can be said right now, at least not by me. An article in Dutch ( about children being the first victims of this conflict, even more so than the truth ) was published in a Dutch daily, I already made an English translation and am trying to get it published in one or more European newspapers. As soon as I know whether or not it will be published outside Holland I will post it on my blog as well.

Laat het aanpakken van zinloos geweld en zware criminaliteit maar aan de Belgen over. Premier Guy Verhofstadt zei het heel mooi naar aanleiding van 'het busincident' gisteren in Antwerpen: "Ik denk dat de tijd is gekomen om de wet aan te passen zodat daders van zware misdrijven, zoals gisteren in Antwerpen, niet vervroegd kunnen vrijkomen, maar bijvoorbeeld pas na twee derde van hun straf." Ben ik nou gek of is hij het?

Normaal gesproken geef ik alleen aan de goede doelen waarvoor kinderen bij ons aan de deur komen collecteren. Zojuist maakte ik een uitzondering. Gisteren las ik over een actie ter gelegenheid van de 113e interland die Edwin van der Sar vandaag voor Nederland speelt ( laten we optimistisch zijn en hopen dat het er zeer binnenkort 116 zullen worden ). In het kader van die actie kun je 1,13/11,30/113,00 ( en naar ik aanneem ook 1130,00 etc. ) Euro overmaken op de rekening van de Doe Een Wens Stichting, een stichting die de liefste wensen van kinderen met een levensbedreigende ziekte helpt vervullen. Van der Sar is ambassadeur van de stichting, vandaar. Al voor 1,13 kun je dus een bijdrage leveren aan het succes van de actie. Die kans om mezelf op een dag als vandaag - waarop het nieuws uit Gaza, Antwerpen en andere plaatsen ter wereld weinig redenen voor vrolijkheid biedt - heel even een symbolisch goed gevoel te geven liet ik me niet ontnemen. PS: Het bankrekeningnummer werkte bij mij niet, ik kreeg tweemaal een foutmelding. Ik heb het bedrag naar het nummer van de Postbankrekening van de stichting ( onder Contact - Contactgegevens ) overgemaakt, dat werkte wel.

De laatste drie columns van Youp van 't Hek zijn weer ouderwets goed, misschien wel omdat hij zo oprecht de draak steekt met de hypocrisie van de Telegraaf, walgt van de persoon Neelie Smit Kroes en vanhopig wordt van wat voor vooruitgang moet doorgaan.

Through Google I saw that Nana Mouskouri also recorded the song. I will stick to Fischer-Dieskau, thank you. Here are the song's lyrics, written by Willhelm Mueller. An English translation you can find on the abovementioned webpage. It is all very sentimental ( after all, we are talking about Romanticism, 1827 ) but, well, but what? There is no but, it is just very sentimental and Schubert turned the words into a wonderful tune. I have been humming the melody for two days already. De kinderen van de rekening

Dat de waarheid het eerste slachtoffer van elke oorlog is is een dooddoener, wat niet betekent dat het een leugen is. Op 9 juni jongstleden vond een explosie plaats op het strand van de Gaza-strook. Zeven leden van een Palestijnse familie kwamen daarbij om het leven. In de twee weken die sindsdien zijn verstreken heeft de Hamas-regering dit incident gebruikt in haar machtsstrijd met President Abbas en zijn Fatah-beweging en in haar pogingen om bij de internationale gemeenschap wrange 'goodwill'-punten te scoren. Israël vermoordt kinderen terwijl Hamas zich keurig inhoudt. Men vergeet daarbij te vermelden dat de Qassam-raketten die al jarenlang bijna dagelijks richting Israël worden afgeschoten – met actieve of passieve hulp van de Hamas - ook slachtoffers hebben gemaakt ( o.a. de driejarige Afik Zahavi z"l ) en het leven van duizenden kinderen en volwassenen in een stadje als Sderot tot een hel maken. Het Israëlische leger daarentegen heeft zijn best gedaan om aan te tonen dat het niet een Israëlische kanonskogel was die de zeven Palestijnse burgers doodde. In kranten, op websites en op de televisie worden 'bewijzen' en argumenten aangedragen die Israël vrijpleiten en duidelijk maken dat de ontploffing in scène gezet is danwel door de Hamas zelf veroorzaakt is, ofwel juist weer laten zien dat het natuurlijk Israël is dat schuldig is. Het spreekt vanzelf dat ook ik de neiging heb om eerder deze dan gene versie van de werkelijkheid te geloven. Toch maakt het per saldo niet echt iets uit wie er verantwoordelijk is. Zoals Yael, een idealistische nieuwe immigrant uit de Verenigde Staten, op haar weblog schreef: ga maar eens aan Huda Ghalia, het meisje dat in één klap haar ouders, broertje en zussen verloor, vragen of het haar werkelijk uitmaakt wie het gedaan heeft. Dat datzelfde meisje op verschillende websites zeven, tien, elf of twaalf jaar oud is maakt alles nog verwarrender en meer onwezenlijk. Iedereen creëert en gelooft zijn eigen waarheid, en de enige waarheid die er toe doet leert ons dat Palestijnse en Israëlische kinderen de eerste en belangrijkste slachtoffers van het Palestijns-Israëlische conflict zijn, eerder dan wat voor waarheid dan ook. De kinderen aan beide kanten van de grens tussen Gaza en Israël leven in voortdurende angst. De Israëlische regering staat onder druk om de constante Qassam-beschietingen vooral niet onbeantwoord te laten, wat er mede voor zorgt dat de voorzichtigheid die het Israëlische leger meestal betracht wanneer het in dichtbevolkte gebieden opereert er meer dan tevoren bij inschiet. Dit heeft nog meer dode kinderen tot gevolg, wat weer een welkome reden is voor Hamas en andere Palestijnse terreurorganizaties om wraak te zweren en nog meer raketten af te vuren. Enzovoort enzovoort: logica en the circle of life hebben in het Midden Oosten helaas nogal eens een verwrongen en macaber karakter. De Palestijnen en Israël zelf lijken het conflict niet op te kunnen of willen lossen. De Palestijnse president Abbas is vrij zwak en moet zijn best doen om niet gezien te worden als te toegeeflijk naar Israël toe. De regering Olmert is er echt niet op uit om Palestijnse kinderen te vermoorden, maar het kan ook niet toestaan dat Sderot een spookstad wordt. De Hamas-regering heeft in de vijf maanden sinds ze gekozen is nooit echt laten zien dat ze bereid is om een geloofwaardige onderhandelingspartner te worden. Het bestaansrecht van Israël is nog steeds niet ondubbelzinnig door de organisatie erkend. In het beste geval wordt halfzacht gesuggereerd dat er over een langdurige wapenstilstand gepraat kon worden, terwijl tegelijkertijd met medeweten of medewerking van Hamas-functionarissen enorme wapenhoeveelheden de Gaza-Strook worden binnengesmokkeld, keer op keer Qassam raketten in Israël ( en in Gaza zelf ) blijven landen, en ook zelfmoordaanslagen in Israël niet zijn gestopt. Dat Amerika en Rusland belangrijker dingen aan hun hoofd hebben is duidelijk. Het is tijd dat de Europese Unie het voortouw neemt en de impasse doorbreekt. Dit moet op een positieve manier gebeuren. We weten zo langzamerhand wel dat ze niet met de Hamas-regering wil samenwerken en geen eenzijdig door Israëlvastgestelde grenzen zal erkennen. Nu zou de Unie eens in een paar punten duidelijk moeten maken wat ze precies wel wil, en hoe zij de toekomst voor Palestijnen en Israëliërs ingekleurd zou willen zien. Laat haar daarna een voorbeeld aan Vito Corleone nemen en Israël en de Palestijnen een alomvattend voorstel doen waar die twee partijen geen nee tegen kunnen zeggen, althans niet zonder zichzelf volledig ongeloofwaardig te maken in de ogen van de internationale gemeenschap en van hun eigen bevolking. Een gebalanceerd, vastberaden en eenduidig Europees voorstel, met economische en politieke 'wortels en stokken', ik zou niet zo gauw weten welk ander wondermiddel hier soelaas zou kunnen bieden. Wat ik wel weet is dat zolang de kinderen in Sderot en Gaza aan onze eigen 'leiders' zijn overgeleverd hun leven niet veel leefbaarder zal worden.

Mr B. Netanyahu is playing Mr Smarty-Pants again. He has the right solutions for all our woes. Of course, if he had been chosen Israelis would be living in peace and quiet now, wouldn't they? Oh no, I forgot, we still would be haunted by the results of Oslo and disengagement, right? Ha'Aretz News Flash: 12:47 Netanyahu: IDF has operational capability to wipe out Gaza (Haaretz) Thank G'd it is not him who is PM right now, things are bad enough as they are already. PS: In all fairness I must admit that I wrote this posting based only on the newsflash. It should be added that Mr Netanyahu said "...but chose not to do so." I still believe that he should not speak out something that is both so obvious and so obviously impossible and wrong, but that is another issue.

Voor een ieder die zich afvroeg "Wat zou ik komende zondag nu weer eens gaan doen?" is dit misschien een nuttige tip.

Nog een aardig commentaar van Hans Jansen op de Van der Horst 'affaire'. Ik vind trouwens de reactie van veel 'medestanders' van professor Van der Horst het beleid van het universiteitsbestuur soms net zo overdreven als dat beleid zelf. Is van alle mogelijke aanleidingen nu juist deze 'affaire' een reden ( of liever, het meest geschikte excuus ) voor een spoeddebat over anti-semitisme in de Arabische wereld? Lijkt me sterk.

Yesterday I was surprised to see Finance Minister Hirchsohn make the headlines with his revelation, in a speech at the prestigious Caesarea Forum, that he and his family have been threatened by "unnamed elements" " for a series of economic reforms planned by his ministry ". No details were given, and it all sounds a bit strange, especially because this minister is not one of the most public figures in Israeli politics. Why did he grab the headlines so eagerly with this story? I do not know, but I was surprised again when a few hours later I read an article that claims that money belonging to one of the organizations that Hirchsohn founded within the framework of the March of the Living project might have been used for ( his ) political activities.

Noa, de beste vriendin van onze zevenjarige dochter ( ze kennen elkaar al vanaf hun tweede levensjaar, toen ze samen op de peuterspeelzaal zaten ), was gisteren bij ons. Ik heb met hen zitten ganzeborden ( niet mijn favoriete spel, maar de kinderen vinden het prachtig ) en terwijl Noa wachtte tot haar moeder haar kwam halen ( nadat onze kinderen in bad waren geweest en hun tanden hadden gepoetst, klaar om meteen daarna naar bed te gaan ) keken ze gedrieen naar een K3 DVD. Noa vond het ook heel erg leuk. De favoriete liedjes van mijn kinderen zijn trouwens Oma's aan de top, Alle Kleuren van de Regenboog en De Drie Biggetjes. Ik stond stomverbaasd toen onze dochter aan haar vriendin keurig in het Hebreeuws uitlegde dat het er in Alle Kleuren om gaat dat om het even welke kleur je hebt, hoe je eruit ziet ( ze trok daarbij spleetogen, ik weet niet of dat politiek correct is, maar goed ) of waar je vandaan komt, je heel goed samen kunt spelen, dansen en zingen. Blijkt maar weer eens dat ze ook zonder mijn uitleg - en zelfs als het uit de mond van Vlamingen komt :-) - meer begrijpen en verstaan dan ik soms wel eens denk.

"Truth is the first ( or at least one of the main ) victim(s) of war" is a platitude, I know, but in the case of the death of the Gaza beach explosion it almost appears to contain more truth than ever before. Those Palestinians who are linked to Hamas did not provide the IDF with reliable data for its inquiry, the IDF released a report in which it claims that this particular explosion was not causes by an Israeli shell, British newspapers and later also an Israeli television station casted doubts on the IDF claims, at least one German newspaper casted serious doubts on the Palestinian claims regarding Israel's guilt and suggested that the disaster was staged. Yesterday, in an unusual move, officials of the Israeli hospital where some of the wounded were treated came with a statement that sows even more confusion. I do not really know whom to believe any more. For several - some of them obvious - reasons I tend to give more credence to Israeli officials than to their Palestinian counterparts, but on the other hand, none of the IDF spokespersons choked on their first lie either, to use a Dutch expression. The wisest and most human comment on this whole affair was probably given by Yael on her weblog, words that remain relevant as long as children in Gaza and Sderot are murdered, wounded and frightened to death: "It doesn't really matter who was responsible for this horrible tragedy. Sure, in the finger-pointing arena it matters, and of course it matters on the international public relations front. But in real nitty gritty human terms, no it doesn't matter. Don't believe me? Go and ask those little girls who lost both parents and their siblings if they care whether it was an Israeli shell that went badly off-target or whether it was a mine planted by Hamas to thwart any further beach use by the Israeli commandos coming in to round up militants. They will tell you that they don't care."

This is the kind of meaningless, costly and futile proposals that can come only out of the hat of a populist who does not have the slightest clue about what it means to spend the tax payers' money properly and responsably, and who knows that his political power is based largely on the ignorance and poverty of many of his supporters. The residents of Sderot have to be helped, but not by cheap symbolic gestures aimed at winning one or two votes for this or that party but with effective responses to and protection against the Qassam attacks, and with other efforts to make life in the city livable again.

Trouw heeft de afscheidsrede van professor Van der Horst online ( hier in PDF, met voetnoten ) gezet. Uit het NRC ( bedankt EJ ) begreep ik dat hij in een eerdere versie Dries van A. en Gretta D. griezels noemde. De hooggeleerde heer heeft daarin natuurlijk volkomen gelijk, wat niet betekent dat zulke bewoordingen erg wetenschappelijk zijn ( al zou het interessant zijn om te kijken of de bewuste bewering wetenschappelijk te onderbouwen is, ik acht het zelfs niet uitgesloten dat dat wel degelijk mogelijk is ), en hij had er waarschijnlijk beter aan gedaan om zijn mening over die twee personen bij een andere gelegenheid en voor een ander publiek te openbaren. Toch vraag ik me af of het g-woord de belangrijkste reden voor de inmenging van het universiteitsbestuur was.

Voor een sfeerimpressie van Cafe Dinitz tijdens de wedstrijd Nederland-Ivoorkust klik hier. De website van Ma'ariv stuurde een verslaggever om die rare Hollanders eens gezellig bezig te zien. De voertaal is Hebreeuws maar het filmpje spreekt voor zich. Hopelijk wordt het morgenavond net zo gezellig in de Gruzenbergstraat nummer 20 in Tel Aviv. Om eerlijk te zijn moet ik zeggen dat - met mijn grote liefde voor mensenmassa's - ik blij ben dat ik de wedstrijd tegen Servie-Montenegro uitkoos om een indruk op te doen, toen was het zeker zo gezellig maar een stuk minder hectisch.

For those of you who wondered why John Paintsil waved the tiny Israeli flag to celebrate during Ghana's victory over the Czech Republic, our Egyptian neigbors have the answer: he is a Mossad agent. Why didn't we think of that? Both Israel and Egypt did not make it to the Worldcup but at least we accept that more easily. We can afford to, of course, because our tentacles reach all over the world, even into the socks of a now world-famous defender from Ghana. He apologized, his country's football association apologized, so everything is back to normal again, right?

When they come back to Israel Mr Paintsil and his two teammates who also play in Israel deserve a welcome like the one that the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team received when it returned home after winning the Final Four. Hopefully this man's naive and courageous act teaches Israelis to treat their foreign workers a little better. If treated as human beings these people can become wonderful goodwill ambassadors for us. Unfortunately, most of them experience particularly the less pleasant traits of the Israeli public and the country's employers.

Ik had heel oppervlakkig over de 'affaire' Van der Horst, joods kannibalisme en de Islam gelezen. Wegens tijdgebrek kon ik me er verder niet in verdiepen. Door dit artikel - dat mijn broer me toestuurde - werd ik een stuk wijzer. Het moet toch ook niet gekker worden.

If I am not mistaken, statistically wives live longer than their husbands. I wonder if the marriage of the British-Jewish millionairess who came to Eilat to marry a dolphin six years her junior is included in those statistics, now that her husband has passed away. The union between these two mammals lasted less than six months. ( Sorry, this was the least corny comment that I could come up with, after I decided not to talk about boytoys, sitting shiva, Anne Nicole Smith etc. ).

Even though Israel did not make it to the World Cup in German, the country's flag was waved yesterday on the field in Cologne, where Ghana beat the Czech Republic 2:0. Three members of the Ghana squad play in Israel ( John Pantsil in Tel Aviv, Emmanuel Pappoe in Kfar Saba, and Sammy Adjei in Ashdod ) and one of them produced a small Israel flag and started to wave it after one of the two goals. Could it be that this is how they wanted to show their appreciation for the wonderful ways in which Israel treats its foreign workers? This morning I already heard someone reassure the Israeli public that the flag was hidden in the player's sock, not in his underpants.

A Dutch version of the following article, that I wrote based on an idea by Karin Kloosterman, was published two weeks ago in the Dutch daily Friesch Dagblad:

Last week was a good week for Israel-bashers worldwide. Iran's president once again used the international stage to attack Israel and the Jewish people, blaming us for sabotaging his planned trip to the FIFA World Cup and calling the German people prisoners of the Holocaust. More importantly, though not more surprisingly, pro-Palestine or rather anti-Israel members of two major unions in Canada and Great Britain managed to pass resolutions in support of boycotts against Israeli companies, academics and universities. Automatically labeling such actions as anti-Semitic is both wrong and counterproductive. Not only does it diminish the value of the A-word, we also should not forget that many of those who criticize Israel's politics do so out of a genuine concern for the wellbeing and security of the Jewish state. Yet this time the accusation might not be unjustified. Just have a look at the websites of both the Canadian Union of Public Employees and of Britain's National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education. It almost seems that the only injustices outside Canada and Britain that prompt union members to issue resolutions are committed by Jews against Palestinians. Apart, of course, from the US-led invasion of Iraq, opposition to which has become a routine act for every self-respecting progressive activist in the West. Interestingly enough we hardly ever hear those activists protest against the attrocities committed by the worst enemies of America, Israel and the West. Look on both unions' websites under 'Israel' and you will find numerous references, a call by UK lecturers to end Israeli attacks against Palestinian schoolchildren, or even a book review titled "The Myths of Zionism". Search under 'Darfur' or 'Tibet' and you will get zero results. O.k., nobody can fight all injustices in the world at once, but a slightly more visible even-handedness and consistency on the part of so-called progressive individuals and NGOs would make the constant claims by Israel-bashers who insist that they are not anti-Israel or – heaven forbid – anti-Semitic much more credible and convincing. Talking about consistency, we wonder how CUPE will implement the boycott. Will its members stop using cellphones that use technology developed by Motorola Israel, or computers with Intel's Centrino chips or its new multi-core processors, both of which were largely developed at the company's facilities in Israel? Will they no longer use AOL Instant Messenger and Skype, both of which use technologies that were pioneered and/or developed in Israel? Will they stop taking or prescribing Copaxone, Rebif, Exelon, Doxil and other drugs that save lives or make lives more livable for thousands if not millions of people all over the world, and that were developed by Israeli companies and/or researchers? Will they refuse to enjoy the benefits of PillCam Capsule Endoscopy technology, developed by Given Imaging? Israel and the Israelis contributed much more to humanity than only that accursed occupation. Because of their ignorance and their hypocricy, many CUPE-Ontario members who voted for the boycott are a bit like the a vegetarian who sneaks meat when nobody is watching. Both Palestinians and Israelis are victims. Victims of their non-leaders, whose bad choices, big egos and personal interests are one of the main reasons why this superfluous conflict has not been solved yet. Victims of different kinds of religious and nationalist fanaticism. Victims of some of our self-proclaimed supporters abroad. The latter often happen to support the most uncompromising and unshakeable views and the most extremist parties to the conflict. There still are ambassadors of sanity and reason among Israelis and Palestinians, those who adhere to a critical, moderate version of their respective religions and/or nationalisms, and who know and admit that not only the other side should change and compromise. They are the ones who hold the key to a better future for both peoples. Unfortunately they are also the ones whose voice is often not really heard abroad. Their complex and subtle views on reality are less attractive for media, and political activists – pro-this or anti-that – who want to make a statement and to feel good about themselves prefer to identify with only one victim, thus ignoring the misery of the other and continuing the suffering for both victims. The only ones who profit from oversimplified resolutions and one-sided boycotts such as those supported by CUPE-Ontario and NATFHE are the fanatics on both sides of the conflict: their prejudices ( "It is all Israel's fault", or "Those anti-Semites only want to destroy Israel" ) are confirmed, they are enabled to keep on holding the vast majority of Palestinians and Israelis hostage, and the situation which turns both peoples into victims is perpetuated indefinitely.

Voor het eerst van mijn leven heb ik afgelopen zondag zowaar een hele voetbalwedstrijd zitten kijken. Voor zover ik me kan herinneren was de laatste keer dat ik met belangstelling meer dan twintig minuten live voetbal heb zitten kijken de tweede helft van de finale van het Europese Kampioenschap in 1988, jaren voordat ik naar Israël vertrok. Afgelopen vrijdag heb ik nog wel, als goede vader, met onze driejarige zoon tien minuten naar de openingswedstrijd van het WK zitten kijken, maar dat was alleen omdat hij even uit bed kwam om te plassen en ik toevallig al zappend bij de wedstrijd was beland. Hij dacht trouwens dat het kadur sal ( basketbal ) was. Ik geef het eerlijk toe, ik ben geen echte sportliefhebber. Ik besloot om eens anderhalf uur lang mijn horizon te verruimen toen ik las dat een groep enthousiaste Nederlanders in café Dinitz in Tel Aviv bijeenkomt om de wedstrijden van het Nederlandse elftal op een groot scherm te volgen. In Nederland ontliep ik altijd alle uitingen van 'het oranje-gevoel', hier zocht ik het op, al was het maar voor één middag. Om eerlijk te zijn moet ik zeggen dat het een leuke en gezellige middag was, met dank aan het Dutch Forum. Dutch Forum – met Christiaan Scholtes, Bert Knot en Matthew Reijnders als actieve spil – richt zich op "het met elkaar in contact brengen van de Nederlanders in Israël". Dat gebeurt onder andere door middel van een internetforum, borrelavonden, de zeer succesvolle Sinterklaas- en Koninginnedagfeesten, en het gezamenlijk kijken van voetbalwedstrijden van Oranje. Sommige forumleden zijn ook erg actief in de stichtingen die twee heuse Nederlandse scholen draaiende houden, Jip en Janneke in Modi'in en Het Kikkerlandje in Tel Aviv. Op die scholen leren en spelen de kinderen – allemaal met minstens één Nederlandse ouder – wekelijks samen met leeftijdgenootjes, en de gezinnen van de leerlingen komen elkaar een paar keer per jaar tegen op de familiefeesten. Kortom, een Nederlandse successtory in het Beloofde Land. Toen ik ruim anderhalf uur voor de wedstrijd bij het café aankwam waren Bert en Matthew druk bezig een groot spandoek ( Holland – Supporters Café – Dutch Forum ), Nederlandse vlaggen, oranje wimpels en balonnen in en rond het café op te hangen. Ik hielp hen even en ging daarna naar de w.c. om mijn oranje t-shirt ( met een glas Heineken erop met het opschrift "Da sind die Holländer wieder", ik kreeg het tijdens mijn laatste bezoek aan Nederland van mijn Japanse schoonzus ) aan te trekken. De voetbalfans, op een enkele uitzondering na met minstens één oranje kledingstuk of attribuut en veelal met rood-wit-blauwe strepen op hun wang, druppelden binnen en toen we opstonden om luid het Wilhelmus mee te zingen telde ik al zeker vijftig mannen, vrouwen en kinderen. In de loop van de wedstrijd kwamen daar nog een twintigtal mensen bij. Ik schat ruwweg dat de verhouding Nederlanders – Israëlische vrienden en partners 60-40 was. Er was patat met oranje mayonaise, ik zag stroopwafels, en er werd een gezellige hoeveelheid ( ik heb absoluut geen dronkemansgelal gehoord of wat voor vervelend gedrag dan ook gezien ) bier gedronken. De twee jongste toeschouwers waren Ella en Gal, een schattige twee maanden oude tweeling, die net als hun ouders in het oranje-wit waren gekleed. Het spreekt vanzelf – dat neem ik tenminste maar aan: nogmaals, ik ben geen deskundige – dat elke goede Nederlandse actie met gejuich en applaus werd beloond, en dat de meeste goede Servisch-Montenegrijnse acties net als iedere voor Nederland ongunstige scheidsrechtersbeslissing op boegeroep konden rekenen. Het meeste applaus was zonder twijfel voor Edwin van der Sar. Toen Arjen Robben het enige doelpunt van de wedstrijd maakte deed zelfs ik aan het vreugdevolle gejoel mee. Net op dat moment kwam een ultra-orthodoxe man binnen. Aan de collectebus in zijn hand te zien liep hij geld in te zamelen voor een goed doel of voor een religieuze school, maar toen hij de oranje massa zag scrok hij zichtbaar, deed een stap naar achteren, en trok de deur achter zich dicht. Ook andere argeloze café-bezoekers deinsden soms terug toen ze de luidruchtige oranje zee zagen. "Deur dicht" was overigens de meest gehoorde kreet gedurende de wedstrijd. De grote ramen van het café waren met zwart papier afgeplakt om het felle zonlicht te weren en voor een redelijk beeld op het scherm te zorgen. De taxichauffeur die me terug naar het treinstation bracht reageerde op mijn t-shirt met de woorden "Ah, Holland, Robben, Ehad-Efes, metsuyan ( 1-0, uitstekend ) ". In de trein trok ik een ander t-shirt aan, zodat ik onderweg naar huis in alle rust dit artikel op mijn laptop kon schrijven. Achter me hoorde ik een jongen in het Russisch de wedstrijd analyseren. Ik versta die taal niet maar kon heel goed horen dat hij het over Golland en Robben had. Helaas worden de andere wedstrijden in groep C op dagen en tijdstippen gespeeld die het mij onmogelijk maken om daarna nog de trein terug naar Haifa te nemen, anders zou ik best zin hebben gehad in nog een avondje oerhollands enthousiasme.

As mad and potentially dangerous Mr Ahmadinejad is, at least he continues to inspire cartoonists to make some very good cartoons. A few more examples.

Het volgende bericht in het nieuwsbulletin van de Wereldomroep dat ik vanmorgen in mijn mailbox vond deed me glimlachen * Chavez in conflict met tv-stations De Venezolaanse president Hugo Chavez heeft gedreigd de uitzendvergunning van een aantal commerciele televisiestations niet te verlengen. Hij zei dat die bezig zijn met psychologische oorlogsvoering tegen de regering en onder het mom van vrijheid van meningsuiting maar zeggen wat ze willen. Ook noemde hij hen agenten van de Verenigde Staten. De oppositie beschuldigt president Chavez er al langer van de pers monddood te willen maken. Blijkbaar heeft president Chavez - de held van iedere Amerika-hater, lijkt het wel - de definitie van 'vrijheid van meningsuiting' nooit in een woordenboek opgezocht, of haar niet echt goed begrepen.

Yesterday on the evening news the mother of one of the teenage girls who were almost kidnapped by Palestinians was asked if she intended to ( allow her daughter to ) continue hitching rides. "Of course," she said, "this is our land!" I have news for her: I live in what is just as much our land - or even more so, I believe, and most civilized countries back me up on this -, and I feel safe here and all that, but I cannot think of a situation in which I will risk my life by taking a ride with people whom I do not know, and I will undoubtedly teach my children not to hitchhike as well. It seems that I am not the only one who believes that for Jews hitchhiking in the Westbank is an irresponsible act.

Thank G'd that the kidnapping incident near the Rahelim junction ended well. Like many people in Israel and like most parents I cannot stop wondering why two ( Jewish ) teenage girls should try to "hitch a ride" in general, and in the Westbank in particular, but of course that is only my leftist, hysterical, defeatist, give-in-to-those-bloody-Arabs side talking.

PS: To the commentators on some websites who point out the fact that most hitchhiking points ( trampiada's ) are also bus stops, and that the girls were simply waiting for the bus, read this on Ha'Aretz' website: "One of the girls who had been waiting at the hitchhiking station, 14, told Israel Radio that she has been hitchhiking since she was in sixth grade."

Voordat ik wilde gaan douchen om in bed te kijken naar weer een herhaling van een van de afleveringen van Frasier die ik al minstens drie of vier keer gezien heb ( samen met Seinfeld blijft die comedy mijn favoriet ) las ik dat Taida Pasic voor haar VWO examen geslaagd is. Haar eindgemiddelde zou voor een gewone scholier redelijk zijn, maar voor iemand met zo'n idioot gespannen en turbulent jaar achter de rug is het een heel goed resultaat. Petje af! Zelf heb ik precies 20 jaar geleden ( wat vliegt de tijd ) VWO examen gedaan ( Nederlands, Latijn, Grieks, Frans, Duits, Engels, Geschiedenis en Staatsinrichting ). Ik weet eigenlijk niet echt meer wat ik van de hele zaak De Nederlandse Staat vs Taida Pasic moet vinden, wie ik gelijk geef etc., maar ik zou het toch een geinige mop vinden als ze nu voor een paar jaar in Leiden rechten kan gaan studeren.

By the way, today exactly 14 years ago I came to Israel to study for one year at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem while living at kibbutz Kissufim. Since that day my permanent place of residence has been here in Israel, with the exception of three months in the winter of 1994-5 ( in order to prepare my aliyah, which I made early 1995 ) and six months that I spent with my wife and our two children in Paris in the winter of 2003-4.

Another interesting analysis by Amos Harel ( this time co-written by Avi Issacharoff ), dealing with the "choice between preventing terror and civilian deaths". As for Israel's PR offensive that was waged after Saturday's explosion on the beach of Gaza, they make the same point that I made yesterday: "Israeli officials announced Tuesday night that the Palestinians killed on the beach did not die from a blast caused by an artillery shell fired at them accidentally but (apparently) from a Palestinian explosive. But what difference will that make if, at the same time, the IDF kills a similar number of civilians during an attack on an Islamic Jihad Katyusha-firing cell?".

Four reasons to smile this morning.

Er zijn sinds gisteravond nog een paar juweeltjes toegevoegd aan de reacties op het artikel waar ik gisteren over schreef. Ik schrijf hier trouwens over niet omdat ik geloof dat de Telegraaf anti-semitisch zou zijn of dat er nergens anders misselijkmakende feedback op nieuwssites wordt geplaatst ( kijk maar eens op Ynet of de website van Ha'Aretz ). Ik waardeer Telegraaf.nl juist heel erg. Voor diepgang, achtergronden en uitgebreide commentaren kom ik er niet ( die zul je er tevergeefs zoeken ) maar als er iets in Nederland gebeurt is het meestal toch de eerste website waar ik kijk, omdat de site heel goed ge-updeet wordt. En de feedback functie trekt nu eenmaal vaak om de een of andere reden juist de meest extreme ( en soms ronduit lage ) types aan: hier let niemand op hun gebrekkige taalgebruik, en in tegenstelling tot de redactie van een ingezonden-brievenrubriek of van een opiniepagina van een krant ( waar dergelijke types net zoveel kans maken om een stuk van hun hand geplaatst te zien als dat ik de kans loop om ooit aan de Olympische Spelen mee te doen ) zal een internetredactie - de 'huisregels' ten spijt - schijnbaar maar zeer zelden een commentaar weigeren. Hier volgen de 'mooiste' reacties die er sinds mijn posting gisteren bijkwamen.

• Zo en nu de waarheid ook maar boven water toveren gezien de papieren van de Bijlmerramp (El AL) toevallig zoek waren geraakt. Praat je over Jodenstreken. Ze voeren veel meer uit dan dat .....FOEI , dat is alles wat de wereldleiding zegt. En Israel gaat rustig weer door met zn eigen zaken......En lacht in zn vuistje.
• Wanneer gaan de Joden de nabestaanden in Rusland vergoeden Al die miljoenen mensen die ze daar vermoord hebben. Ook de Tsaar en zijn familie moesten op laffe manier vermoord worden. Ineen jaar tijd werden er meer mensen vermoordt dan door alle Tsaren bij elkaar
• de enige persoon in het hele geschiedenis die wist hoe een jood in elkaar zit was hitler een daarom slachte hij ze af. maar als de rest van de westerse werld nu wakker zouden woorden, dan houd ik mijn hart vast wat er nu met de joden zal gebeuren. der is maar een ras die schijt heeft aan de werldbevoling een dat is de jood . ik weet dit klinkt antie semetismisch maar vroeg of laat zullen julie er achter komen en dan tja........
• Ik kom uit Suriname, daar wonen alle geloofsgemeenschappen broederlijk naast elkaar. Toch valt mij iets op. Hoe kan een volk (joodse) die zoveel geleden heeft tijdens de holocaust een ander volk(palestijnen) op de zelfde manier behandelen? Onbegrijpelijk vind ik dit. Dus hebben de Joden niets geleerd van de oorlog. Want, wie pijn en leed heeft moeten doorstaan, zal het een ander ook niet aandoen..De Palestijnen worden vernederd, vermoord, verkracht etc..a la nazi....Ga zo door joden, wie wind zaait zal storm oogsten

PS: Bij bepaalde onderwerpen kun je er bij wijze van spreken gif op innnemen dat er antisemitische reacties zullen komen. Zo valt bij een artikel over de Deventer moordzaak ( die ik verder niet heb gevolgd en waarbij ik overigens geen flauw idee heb waarom Maurice de Hond zich er mee bemoeide, maar dat terzijde ) het volgende 'prachtcommentaar' over De Hond te lezen: "Deze man zie ik graag op z'n bek gaan. Plug hem leeg of laat hem voor eewig zijn vervelende Joodse muil houden met al die onzin onderzoekjes en conclusies die nog nooit zijn uitgekomen. " Hadden de andere 110 reageerders niet het lef om het j-woord te gebruiken of zouden ze serieus denken dat het feit dat De Hond nu eenmaal joods is er hier niet echt toe doet?

Kijk eens even bij de reacties op een artikel op Telegraaf.nl waarin staat dat Menachem Begin in 1952 direct betrokken zou zijn geweest bij een moordaanslag op Konrad Adenauer ( een interessant verhaal, maar daar gaat het hier niet om ). Ik geef hier de meest weerzinwekkende commentaren ( m.b.v. knip&plak, zonder het te redigeren ). Voor de volledigheid moet hier ook vermeld worden dat verschillende andere lezers goed tegengas geven.

• Het gaat die Joden ook alleen maar om geld geld geld. Gatverdamme... tis nix en word nix met dat Israel.
• Dit zijn nou is echte jodestreken, dat doen ze al heel lang en nog steeds. Bijvoorbeeld 11/9 alle joden hadden op die dag vrij toen de aanslag gebeurde in New york. Zo zijn er meer van die dingen die alles in het geheim gingen. En op deze manier krijgen ze nooit de schuld, slim van ze en daar komt het woord vandaan "joden streken"
• Maar het joodse volk is heel zielig want die hebben de holocoast meegemaakt. En ze hebben het land van de Palestijnen ingepikt. Maar ze blijven zielig.
• De Duitsers hebben VIJF JAAR tekort tijd gehad! Dat blijkt maar weer....
• echt een jodenstreek. ik heb toch al jaren niets meer op met de joden. wat ze in palestina doen,kan al helemaal niet door de beugel. en dan op grond van de bijbel,land in pikken,en miloenen mensen verdr. ik spuug op ze.

On the other hand, as long as you do not make a more convincing and seemingly sincere effort not to hurt civilians ( even if you run the risk of losing your target, maybe - and I mean maybe - unless that target is someone like Zarqawi ), all your PR-efforts aimed at making it known to the world that only three days ago it was not you who killed children are utterly useless.

Not that it really matters anymore, the damage has been done, but it becomes more and more unlikely that an Israeli shell killed seven Palestinians last Saturday, and it is highly probable that a Hamas bomb - one of many that were planted all over the Gaza beach in order to hurt Israeli naval commandos who Hamas thought would come into Gaza from the sea to attack Qassam launching cells - is the cause of the disaster. Read this article by Amos Harel of Ha'Aretz ( a newspaper that knows how to criticize and accuse the IDF and the Israeli government if it has a reason and a solid basis to do so ) and you will see that the IDF-massacre-claims by Hamas and by all other friends of Israel are mostly based on hot air and on propaganda that is aimed at strengthening ( or rather at limiting the damage to ) Hamas' position internationally, within the Arab-Muslim world and most of all within Palestinian society. The three main arguments that say much for the theory of a Hamas-induced accident and speak against an IDF shell having caused the killing are:

• The shrapnel. Three people wounded in the blast are now hospitalized in Israel. Shrapnel was apparently removed from their bodies, and this is likely to reinforce the conclusion that the explosion was caused by a bombrather than a shell.
• The crater. Based on photographs, the crater left on the beach by the blast seems to have been made by an explosion from below (a mine), not a hit from above (a shell).
• Intelligence. Israel has amassed considerable information indicating that over the past few weeks, ever since Israeli commandos infiltrated Gaza and killed a rocket-launching cell, Hamas has been systematically mining the northern Gaza beach in an attempt to keep Israeli commandos from landing there again.

I do not have time or patience to sit and search for articles in foreign media that will mention the findings of the IDF committe of inquiry to the incident, especially because I know for sure that if those media write or talk about those findings - and if at all they are willing to give credence to an IDF inquiry: after all, it is much fancier to believe those poor Palestinians, no matter who is leading those Palestinians and most media by the nose -, no medium will give the same prominence to a corrected version of events that it gave to the 'original', more dramatic and black-and-white ( and anti-Zionist ) and therefore more interesting version. As I said, the damage already has been done, and nobody is interested in a more nuanced and complex interpretation of reality. So Israel carried out a massacre in Jenin in April 2002 and another on the beach of Gaza on June 10th 2006. This is a war that Israel simply cannot win, which does not mean that we should stop trying.

Ik volg de Amsterdamse gemeente- en deelraadspolitiek niet echt op de voet. Wel kan ik me nog herinneren dat ik erg opkeek toen ik jaren geleden las dat rabbijn Lody van de Kamp deelraadslid voor het CDA werd. Inmiddels is hij, na negen jaar zichtbaar actief te zijn geweest, fractievoorzitter voor die partij in de deelraad Zuider Amstel. Blijkbaar is de samenwerking tussen een orthodoxe rabbijn met een partij waarbij toch wel heel veel om de C draait minder absurd dan ze op het eerste gezicht zou lijken. Nu las ik dat meneer Van de Kamp zelfs naar de Tweede Kamer uitgezonden zou willen worden. Ik wens hem veel succes. Zijn visie op integratie ( 300 jaar Nederlanderschap en toch anders ) is boeiend te noemen, hij weet zonder meer waar hij het over heeft en veel 'andere Nederlanders' kunnen wat van hem leren, lijkt me.

Read this and tell me if you still are 100 % sure that the IDF killed the people on the Gaza beach last Saturday.

Yesterday the Mexican soccer team reduced the chances of the German government being forced to deal with the possibility of a visit to Germany by the Iranian president. Mexico beat Iran 3-1. I watched the game Holland -Serbia/Montenegro ( 1-0 ) in a cafe in Tel Aviv. Though I am not a sports fan I thought it might be a good idea to write an article about a group of Dutch soccer fans coming together - dressed in orange, of course - in the heart of Tel Aviv to watch all games of the Dutch team. The article will appear in the next issue of the Dutch-Jewish weekly NIW. I must say that I had a very good time. Here are some pictures.

Wouter, one of my Dutch readers, pointed out to me that - like all other readers who sent me feedback ( thank you all for that ) - he did not see any pop-ups on the main page anymore, but one iLead pop-up appeared on this page. If you look at that page you will see that for some reason - even though I deleted the NedStat code from my template - it still has the NedStat/Webstats4u icon, whereas the main page now has the Onestat.com icon instead. It could be that on archived pages you will continue to see the NedStat icon and thus also a pop-up, but I think and hope that from now on on the main page and in post-June-6th-2006 postings you won't be bothered by them anymore. I must say, by the way, that the Onestat data look pretty good.

IDF officials have reported that the killing of civilians on the Gaza beach yesterday could have been caused by a stray artillery shell or by the Palestinians themselves. In the first case Israel is still responsible, I am afraid, the second assumption would almost be too 'good' to be true, although the fact that the Palestinians refuse to disclose the exact location and time of the explosion raises suspicions and many questions. This would not be the first time that the Palestinians hurt their own people - on purpose or by chance - and Israel gets all the blame. The dead and wounded are a very welcome 'excuse' for Hamas to break the diplomatic and political deadlock that it has reached internationally and in its struggle with Fatah and the Palestinian president ( e.g. about the referendum on the prisoners' "statehood manifesto" ).

Still, the damage to Israel is done and innocent people were murdered. If you understand Dutch you should have a look at the website of Holland's most popular daily, de Telegraaf. I knew that people - especially those who have an irresistible urge to leave feedback on newspaper's websites - can be stupid, misinformed, biased and violent, but comments such as the following made my skin crawl ( I tried to keep the translations as verbal as possible, and not to turn the often faulty grammar into correct sentences, and I did not translate any predictable comments by people who used 'Muslim-sounding names' ):

• "...Excellent, boys, wipe Israel off the map, they asked for it."
• "...the Jews over there are the biggest threat to world peace..."
• "...time for a pogrom in the Gazastrip and then continue towards Iran."
• "It's about time for Israel and the allies to raze the whole mess in that sandbox to the ground, and exterminate them once and for all with atomic bombs (*), because they will want to fight until eternity, those contaminated Islamites"
• "Let them destroy each other. After that we will divide the land among the neigboring countries."
• "Israel should persist once and chase all Palestinians off the globe. Maybe they could sweep off some more Islamites at the same time. Only then will we have quiet."
• "Maybe some German Apache helicopters should shoot the hell out of the Dutch on ( the ) Zandvoort ( beach ), before they realize what occupation and injustice is."
• "The Jews only use aggression to get more attention and land [...] we should have let them bob up and down on the sea ( on the Exodus )..."
• "Those Jews should stop the bullshit over there, leave the Palestinians alone and give the Palestinians their land back! As long as Israel does not do that Palestina's attacks are simply justifiable."

(*) this sounds like a'supporter' of Israel. It does not seem that he has any idea about the distances over here, or that he has any clue about nuclear fallout.

When I read this article in the afternoon I shrugged my shoulders. I do not believe for a moment that the Mohammed cartoons affair, the London and Madrid bombings raised awareness among Europeans regarding the dangers of a Muslim intifadah, Islamist terror etc. Let me give you two/three reasons for my skepticism:

• too many European leaders and opinion makers continue to bend over backwards to apologize whenever even one Muslim claims to be offended by this or that ( please notice that I am not encouraging insulting other people's religions, but as long as someone is insulted by a stupid drawing and not by his co-religionists' numerous, hideous crimes I consider him/her a hypocrite and do not take his sensitivity serious );
• In less than a month Londoners will remember the bombings in which 54 people were murdered. Still, until today the city's mayor has failed to condemn suicide terrorism as such, Also, a major British teacher union decided to boycott Israel even though it never ever would consider condemning any terrorist act or regime, or the crimes committed by Arab militias in Darfur. Sorry, but those are no signs that the British 'understand' Islamist terror or are more aware of its dangers. Maybe one could say that the British are not European, though.

Anyway, even if we assume that ambassador Eran was right, I am afraid that no European will understand the killing of several civilians, including at least two children, on a Gaza beach by IDF artillery early this evening. This incident definitely will not 'increase sympathy' for Israel among Europeans. You can explain away and gloss over wounded or even dead civilians when a person like Zarqawi or Jamal Abu Samhadana is eliminated ( although it is always hard to 'sell' or justify killed civilians as - what an ugly and brutal term - collateral damage ). Also, I understand and in a way agree with the Sderot resident who this week on television said that not the people of Sderot should be shaking with fear ( because of the Qassam rockets ) but the people of Gaza. Yet a civilized nation cannot afford itself blunders - or I would almost say criminal mistakes - such as this Gaza beach shelling. Let's be cynical and say that hopefully the world is too busy with the opening game of the FIFA World Cup 2006 to pay attention to this fiasco.

• a) it refers to the FIFA World Cup 2006, which starts today in Germany,
• b) it refers to Iran, a subject that I am interested in,
• c) I do not have time or inspiration for another posting today,

I posted it anyway. I am not one of the 38.000 Israelis who subscribed to a package that includes broadcasts of all the WC games. I am not a real sports fan, and I think that paying 4-500 NIS a year to the Israel Broadcast Authority plus a high monthly fee to the Yes satellite company is enough. It is ridiculous that we are forced to pay extra if we want to watch all matches, the IBA and/or ( one of ) the two commercial channels should have been given the broadcast rights. If Holland makes it to the final ( fat chance ) I might watch that game, like the opening game and a few other matches it will be broadcast on one of the channels that we can watch 'for free' ( channel 10, 11 or 22 ). The rest of the games I might follow by once in a while visiting any of the sites that keeps the scores.

I consider changing my web stats provider. It seems that NedStat really is the reason why pop-ups appear on this weblog, I even started to see them myself now and then, even though the software that I use is supposed to block pop-ups. In order to make sure that NedStat is the 'problem' I removed its code from my template. Please tell me if you still see anything popping up. If you have any recommendations regarding free web stats please let me know. Does anybody have experience with this provider? I do not want to pay for the stats but I also do not want ( my readers ) to be bothered by advertisements and other annoying things that I ( they ) did not ask for.

Inshâ'Allah!! This would be very, very good news indeed. I am not a very vengeful person, but there are a few people whose arrest I would applaud, and over whose death I would not weep, au contraire. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is - or, let's hope, was - one of them. PS: CNN and BBC insist on calling the man an insurgent and Ha'Aretz calls him a militant. All that causes my breakfast to surge. Sky News, more correctly, calls him a terror leader and a terrorist mastermind. Ynet says he was a terrorist and a terror mastermind.

On May 16th Hamid, the first and until now only Iranian reader who ever left a comment on my blog ( and I appreciate his feedback very much, even though we seem to disagree ), wrote:

I am afraid I cannot agree with him. If someone time and again questions the very occurence of the Holocaust and publicly said that Israel should be wiped off the map of the earth, that person did say something against the Jewish people. Also, it is he who is dramatizing the situation with his constant verbal attacks against Israel ( and against Holocaust victims ), not me.

If the following newsflash on Ynet turns out to be true ( unfortunately press releases and reports by Iranian exiles' organizations have not always been very trustworthy ) it would prove that my and other people's suspicions are based on a little more than just a gut feeling:

One of the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's aids, Muhammad Ali Ramin spoke to university students and said that "Jews are the people who caused the most damage to the human race," reported the web site "Rose Online" which is run by Iranian exiles. He also said, among other things, that "The Jews are dirty people who in the past used to be the source of diseases like typhus and the plague."
