While looking for online information on another subject I came across this article in English about Samuel Sarphati ( 1813 - 1866 ), a Dutch-Jewish doctor and chemist who played a vital role in improving the living conditions of the poor in Amsterdam, and in changing the face of the city. Apparently he even was named the Dutch Haussmann. A park and a street were named after him.
