An almost 20-year old clip, which I saw on the weblog of a Dutch correspondent in Paris, shows then French President Francois Mitterand, and his Prime Minister and contender for the Presidency Jacques Chirac in a very polite but oh so biting conversation. Chirac says that that evening he is not the Prime Minister, and Mitterand is not the President. Both of them are presidential candidates, equals, who will be judged by France's voters. He finishes by saying "So allow me to call you Mr ( Monsieur ) Mitterand." to which Mitterand brilliantly, stoically, and hilariously replies "You are absolutely right, Mr Prime Minister ( Monsieur le Premier Ministre )."
