Fokke and Sukke's view on the new situation in Gaza: "Fokke & Sukke think that you can say what you want ( about them ), but 'at least ( now ) the trains leave on time...under Hamas' ".

Aleph Bais
Here is a funny parody on Na'omi Shemer's children's song based on the Hebrew alphabet. The singers make fun of the violent protests by the ultra-orthodox against the Gay Pride Parade in Jerusalem and other things that they call Hilul HaShem ( or that somehow hurt their feelings or their position ). This clip was taken from a satirical show with, among others, Uri Gotlieb. It appears to have been broadcast around Purim. Although you have to have a basic knowledge of Hebrew, Yiddish and the Israeli news to appreciate this video and understand what it jokes about, I thought it deserved a posting on my weblog.

To be honest, for every reason why each of the three candidates should be Israel's president at least one reason can be found why (s)he should not. Shimon Peres undoubtedly has the most impressive record, a record that is unparalleled in Israeli and world history, and most of us wish him to reach the age of 120 in health and happiness, but I cannot get really excited about an 84-year old president who joint a new parve party only to postpone the end of what already was a striking career. It is often said that Shimon Peres deserves to become president, as a conclusion of a wonderful career and because - in spite of the great services that he rendered to this state - he lost in almost all internal and national elections in which he faced direct opponents. In one of the morning talk shows I heard Ari Shavit, of Ha'Aretz, rightly point out that such a motive is not really relevant, and even less democratic. I am not exactly enthusiastic about any of the three candidates, if anything they reflect the absense of impressive personalities who represent some sort of consensus in this country. It would be very refreshing to see a woman become president, and Colette Avital - like Peres - speaks both French and English very well and knows her way on the international stage, but I just don't know... Of all three, I have the least sympathy (*) for Re'uven Rivlin. Years ago, when I only started to watch Israeli television and before I got to know Rivlin as a politician I saw him once in a while as a participant in the satirical "No one to talk to", where he was about the only rightwing - and the least funny, if I remember correctly ;-) - clown on the panel. On several occasions I criticized his comments or actions ( see here, here, here, here, and here ), but above all there is one serious disadvantage that he has over the other two candidates: he is a lawyer :-) . May the most deserving (wo)man win, and may (s)he bring some dignity to Israel and to Israeli politics, for a change.

Itzhak Perlman plays Klezmer
While searching for videos of some of my favorite bands and artists last week, I came across this fragment from the DVD/video In the Fiddler's House, in which you can see and hear Itzhak Perlman play together with some of today's best klezmer bands and musicians; Brave New World, the Klezmatics, the Klezmer Conservatory Band, Andy Statman. I very much recommend the CDs In the Fiddler's House and Live in the Fiddler's House.

Six Day War - why King Hussein became involved
This is one of the 244 clips. I don't know this person and did not check if all that he says is true, but I very much liked the setting - given the subject under discussion - and the man's hat.

The popular ( and often very, very funny ) Dutch cartoon characters Fokke and Sukke had an interesting view on the new government. The two "are glad that Protestants and Catholics will govern together: Then finally Ireland can make a start...with secularization."

Ach ja, de donor-show.
Ha'Aretz' Bradley Burston wrote an excellent op-ed article about the attempts by the British UCU to boycott Israeli academics. He found an almost perfect description of such boycott attempts: moral masturbation.
I still have not read anything serious about the claim that Israel itself was somehow behind the hijacking of the Air France plane in June-July 1976. Notice that the BBC based this story only on one document in which one unnamed source is quoted by one British diplomat, a few days after the hijacking and before the Israeli rescue operation at Entebbe airport. Good enough for one small headline but apparently not enough for a thorough investigation and review of history. If the BBC took itself seriously - maybe it stopped doing so quite a while ago, I don't know - it would come up with such an investigation.
