Yesterday evening, while zapping before going to bed, I arrived at the Mezzo channel, where the Concertgebouw Orchestra was playing Hector Berlioz's beautiful Symphonie Fantastique. The performance must have been more than 20 year old, given the faces and clothes ( and glasses and hairdo ) of the musicians and some members of the audience, plus the fact that Bernard Haitink was the director. When I saw the orchestra's timpanist I remembered what my father ( still every inch a musician and music lover ) used to say whenever we watched a performance of the Concertgebouw Orchestra: the two of them had served together in the same military band in the 1950s.
